He was a skilled flamenco guitarist and a consummate reader. Before his final year at school, in 1955, James made his first appearance on TV as a teenage rebel, Hal Ditmar, in an episode of John Frankenheimers TV series Climax! titled Deal a Blow. This episode was later reprised as a feature film named The Young Stranger (1957), starring MacArthur in the same character.
